Hudson Architects has just completed the transformation of ‘The Machrie’ a much-loved local landmark which had fallen into disrepair into a fantastic 47-bedroom boutique golf hotel located on the idyllic Laggan Bay on the Isle of Islay. The front elevation of the existing hotel was sensitively refurbished, retaining many original features to contrast against the more contemporary wings and buildings which face the golf course. These new buildings offer high ceilings and incredible views. Externally the building sits well in the landscape by use of local materials and forms.
We were appointed as architects to lead an extensive team of consultants and specialists from inception through to completion. Together, we were able to deliver a well thought out and beautifully detailed building on a challenging and exposed site. We achieved this by good collaboration, careful planning & coordination and employing the latest working methods. For example, all of our drawn information was produced using one fully coordinated 3D BIM model, which offered huge advantages both at design stage and on site.
The hotel is now open again after five years and has been well received by the locals and the international golfing community alike. Facilities include a superb elevated bar and restaurant with views of the 18th hole and Atlantic Ocean beyond, a private cinema, spa, gym, private dining, driving range a courtyard and marquee for events and private lodges set within the grounds of the golf course.
